A major technique that Dr. Jarrod Wilner uses for sports injuries is Graston Technique. This technique historically has resulted in positive outcomes for 75-90% of conditions treated. It incorporates metal tools to gently explore and treat deeper tissues, is an effective treatment for a variety of conditions, including:
- sports injuries
- extremety pain
- tendonitis
- soft tissue fibrosis
- chronic inflammation
The Graston Technique uses a specifically crafted set of metal tools to help the doctor reach deeper tissue. Much like a stethescope helps a doctor hear deeper inside the body, the tools help the doctor feel deeper into the tissue to identify and treat scar tissue and other kinds of soft tissue restrictions. A certified clinician uses the instruments to comb over affected areas and “catch” on fibrotic tissue, which immediately identifies the areas of restriction. Once the tissue has been identified, the instruments are used to break up the scar tissue so it can be absorbed by the body. This can restore movement and relieve pain.
The technique causes changes that promote healing such assoothing increases in skin temperature due to increased blood flow, increases in cellular activity, including fibroblasts and mast cells, and histamine responses due to mast cell activity. It also spreads and stretches connective tissue and muscle fibers and breaks down areas that are too built up with scar tissue that hasn’t healed properly. It was even help facilitate reflex changes in chronic muscle holding patterns, which can be a cause of chronic pain.
